The going rate for scrap metal in our area is $135/ton…I guess China is building a dam, and they’re paying really well for scrap metal with which to fill it? Whatever the reason, I’m happy. Bye-bye garbage truck and bed, bye bye ’86 and ’74 Ford skeletons, and motorcycle parts and a toooon of other things…off my property! Nothing like cold cash to motivate…
I’ve been outside slapping hubby’s hand every time he thinks about salvaging an engine or part, and he’s been having a blast with his dad’s chopsaw. We sold one load last week and have the trailer half loaded with another.
I never thought I’d be glad we had so much junk! But I’m so glad we’re finally moving it on out of here…(actually, glad is a very tame word for the euphoria that is settling in!)
I’m sure there is a moral to be gleaned from this trash turned treasure story…not that any of you have spare garbage trucks sitting around (if you can cut them in pieces they’re worth $200/ton!)–dh bought “ours” for the price of the rebuilt engine. Unfortunately, we had to take the whole mess in order to have the engine. *eye roll*
But there you have it! The decluttering has begun!

Mary – if only you knew how much I can relate to this! My dad – must be the farmer in them! – loves to collect old cars. He’s already sold two old combines and I’m hopeful these prices will inspire more sell offs. My teenage nephew is working out a deal to sell the scrap on the shares. I did a news article last summer about metal prices. Some of the most interesting stories in our town are the people waiting in line at the scrap yard!
Yup, the decluttering part isn’t that much fun…but the satisfaction when done is awesome! I have a long ways to go…so does dh, for that matter!
Susie, we saw a combine at the metal yard! Thankfully, with it being a relatively small town, there wasn’t a line, but I noticed loadfuls came through pretty regularly while they were unloading us. That is so interesting, about people making the most of this. My dh and I were thinking of all the farms around us with acres of old machinery. There’s a killing to be made, if you had the time and equipment to go “clean up” people’s property!
I love decluttering, unfortunately mine doesn’t extend to engines and spare parts etc. More like my daughters room which looks like a hoarder’s heaven sometimes lol. Any chance of some before and after photos Mary?

Unfortunately, or fortunately!!! 😉 It’s a lot of work…if we didn’t have a CAT to lift these heavy items, we’d just be stuck with them. As it is, we had to borrow my fil’s heavy duty flatbed trailer to cart it all to the metal yard!
My daughters love to hoard things too…they see everything as an item that bears *potential* crafting possibilities! Drives me batty sometimes!

My husband “scrapes” all the time. He picks up other people’s junk for them and cashes it in. We also pick up alluminum cans along side the road too. Every little bit counts.
You’re right, it does add up. Can’t wait to see what our current load brings!
