Homemade Crackers

I think one of my favorite things about winter is that we can never go overboard on soups! And to think my dh, prior to being married, thought soups were for sick people! NotMany Fresh Soft Golden Baked Biscuits in a Pile hearty beef stews, chicken and dumplings, or chili with cornmeal dumplings! And what is soup without crackers?

This is a fun project for the daughters, and a great way to showcase their efforts at mealtime! And credit for these, as well as a great homemade tomato soup recipe, goes to Mrs. Lydia at the Home Living blog. Be sure to visit her sometime, she’s a wealth of encouragement to stay at home wives and mothers.

Homemade Soda Crackers

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/3 cups milk
  • salt to taste
  1. Mix flour, baking powder and shortening–add milk and blend well.
  2. Form a ball of dough and cut into four pieces.
  3. Roll dough out very thin.
  4. Cut with a cookie cutter or the top of a glass (wet the glass first).
  5. Place on cookie sheet. Prick with a fork 4-5 times and sprinkle with salt. Bake at 375 degrees 8 to 10 minutes or until golden (watch crackers carefully so they don’t burn).

Mmm! Perfect alongside your soups this winter!

  1. I got curious about crackers so i looked in what I told you earlier was Baird’s Book on Breads. I was wrong. it is Bernard Clayton’s Book on breads. He has 12 pages on crackers…different kinds. And I found the reason I never tried his recipe for soda crackers. It calls for malt syrup. Have you ever heard of that? I figured probably the recipe wouldn’t turn out without it. I’m eager to try your recipe. I have always loved doing from scratch some of the things we usually buy already made. So I definitely will try them. Incidently the pumpkin/turkey soup you sent home with your Dad was wonderful.

  2. You are so awesome, Mary. I just printed out the slow cooker Enchilada recipe. I love making crackers….just don’t do it too often. But I love it when we do!

  3. Mom, I’m so glad you liked the soup! I’m trying to find out what malt syrup is, and where you buy it…and in the process found a link for the recipe you mentioned from Bernard Clayton’s book. I loved the variations listed beneath the recipe! Yum! http://www.recipelink.com/ch/bow/041999/smallbreads.html

Holly, nowhere near awesome, not me! But thanks anyway! These are yummy crackers, but I can’t wait to try them with whole wheat flour…

  4. Hi Jen! I knew you’d moved, and am so happy for you! Will you be settled in by Christmas…or almost? 😉 Welcome back to blogland!

  5. I got a special request from my hubby to make chili and cornbread. So, last night, his request was granted.

I love soups, vegetable, chicken and dumplings, beef stew, calabaza, menudo, I could go and on. And the best part? Most of these dishes are healthy.

  6. Me too, Leticia…I could live on soups! Please give me a description of calabaza and menudo…never heard of these!

I just made chili and cornbread, but am keeping it stashed for the next couple of days in case our power goes out!
